Investigation Update - January 3, 2004

Windjammer Barefoot Cruises reported an increased number of cases of gastrointestinal (GI) illness on the cruise ship, Legacy, for the voyage completed on January 3, 2004 , (sailing dates: 12/27/03-1/3/04) in St Thomas.

On January 3, Windjammer Barefoot Cruises contacted CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) staff to report that an unusual number of Legacy passengers were experiencing GI illness. On January 3, the ship’s medical staff reported that 22 of 107 (20.54%) passengers and 2 of 43 (4.65%) crew members were ill. The predominant symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

The vessel underwent extensive cleaning and disinfection. Windjammer Barefoot Cruises provided special daily reports to VSP throughout the next cruise; elevated levels of GI illnesses were reported on the following voyage (January 4-10).  Lab specimens were not obtained.
