Investigation Update - December 13, 2004

SilverSea Cruise Line reported an increased number of cases of gastrointestinal (GI) illness on the cruise ship, Silver Shadow, for the voyage completed on December 11, 2004, (sailing dates: 12/04-12/14/2004) in San Diego, CA.

On December 13, SilverSea Cruise Line contacted CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) staff to report that an elevated number of Silver Shadow passengers and crew members were experiencing GI illness. The ship’s medical staff reported that 11 of 275 (4.0%) passengers and 20 of 291 (6.87%) crew were ill. The predominant symptom was diarrhea. All ill people were given antibiotics.

SilverSea Cruise Line provided updates to VSP. The ship returned back to expected levels of illness.
