OPRP - Case Reporting Requirements

Laboratory-confirmed or suspected cases of gastrointestinal illness in either passenger or crew members caused by common enteric pathogens should be reported by either e-mail (vsp@cdc.gov) or telephone (1.800.323.2132) promptly to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP).  Some common enteric pathogens are:

  1. Caliciviruses (including Noroviruses)
  2. Entamoeba histolytica (Amebiasis)
  3. Hepatitis A virus
  4. Salmonella spp.
  5. Shigella spp
  6. Giardia lamblia
  7. Campylobacter spp
  8. Escherichia coli (pathogenic and toxigenic)
  9. Clostridium botulinum (this should be immediately reported to the emergency  number for foodborne diseases)
  10. Bacillus cereus
  11. Cyclospora
  12. Cryptosporidium spp
  13. Listeria monocytogenes
  14. Yersinia spp
  15. Vibrio cholerae
  16. Foodborne intoxications (food poisoning syndromes)
