Schedule and Programming

The duration of the internship is nine weeks. Interns will be located in NCEH/ATSDR offices where you will engage in summer-long projects; participate in trips and activities that expose you to the many facets of environmental health at both the local and Federal level; as well as develop communication, leadership and inquire/analysis skills.

Schedule

Week 1: Orientation

Orientation week includes security clearance, trainings and various introductions to the CDC and ATSDR at the Roybal and Chamblee campuses.

Week 2-8: Ongoing Activities

  • Assigned project work
  • Weekly activities (journal club, SME discussions, field trips)
  • Professional development/trainings
  • Presentation on an environmental health topic Interns in Meeting

Week 9: Final Presentations, Program Evaluations, Intern Graduation

  • Final presentations
    • Summer experience
    • Summer projects
  • Wrap-up lunch with interns and mentors
  • Evaluation form, badge return, etc.
  • Final writing requirement

 

Programming

Group of Summer Interns
  • Shadowing of senior officials/scientists in NCEH/ATSDR
  • Informal “Brown-Bag” lunches and discussion with Subject Matter Experts
  • Weekly Journal Clubs lead by interns
  • Career development presentations and meetings
  • Environmental health field trips related to the week’s environmental health issue (Fridays)
  • Interns will also have the opportunity to attend open CDC lectures/presentations
  • Possibility of travel to attend meetings/conferences or shadow environmental health professionals in the field (dependent on program funding and project scope of work)
  • Professional mentors will be assigned to each summer intern
