Weekly Update: West Nile Virus Activity --- United States, July 10--16, 2002
This report summarizes West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance data reported to CDC through ArboNET and verified
by states and other jurisdictions as of July 16, 2002.
During the reporting week of July 10--16, two human cases of WNV were reported, both in Louisiana. During the
same period, WNV infections were reported in 55 dead crows, 115 other dead birds, nine horses, and 19 mosquito pools.
During 2002, three human cases of WNV encephalitis or meningitis have been reported, all from Louisiana. Among
these cases, all were men, the median age was 62 years (range: 53--78 years), and the dates of illness onset ranged from June
10--28; no cases were fatal. In addition, 171 dead crows and 266 other dead birds with WNV infection were reported from 20
states and the District of Columbia (Figure); 23 WNV infections in horses have been reported from four states (Florida,
Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas). During 2002, WNV seroconversions have been reported in 10 sentinel chicken flocks from
Florida; WNV seropositivity has been reported from two states (Indiana and Louisiana) in two wild birds that were caught
and released; and 26 WNV-positive mosquito pools have been reported from six states (Alabama, Illinois, Indiana,
Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Ohio).
