Notice to Readers Cancer Control Month and National Minority Cancer Awareness WeekApril is designated Cancer Control Month by the American Cancer Society (ACS), and April 14-20, 1996, is National Minority Cancer Awareness Week. One of every four deaths in the United States results from cancer, and in 1996, an estimated 554,740 persons in the United States will die from cancer (1). Of the estimated 1,359,150 cancer cases that will be diagnosed in the United States during 1996, approximately 174,380 will be among racial/ethnic minorities (1). Cancer incidence and death rates vary among different racial/ethnic groups, in part because of differences in lifestyle, behavior, and access to health care. CDC collaborates with public, private, and volunteer partners to promote cancer prevention and control activities.
