What’s Next?

With rapid advances in technology, CDC scientists are working to update MicrobeNet with new tools.

Whole genome sequences for each organism in the database are being added as part of the Advanced Molecular Detection initiative at CDC.

Protein search capability was developed in collaboration with Bruker and will allow users to search the database directly from their Bruker MALDI-TOF MS (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry) instruments based on the pathogen’s protein profile or proteomic fingerprint.

MicrobeBridge, a DNA sequence editing tool provided through a collaboration with ThermoFisher, allows for searching the database directly from ABI DNA sequencers used in laboratories around the world.

New pathogens are being added by CDC scientists each month and the library will eventually expand to more than 3,000 bacteria and fungi.
