Why

Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat in human medicine. Antibiotic-resistant foodborne Salmonella and Campylobacter alone cause an estimated 410,000 illnesses annually in the United States. While progress has been made in recent years, 1 in 5 Salmonella Heidelberg infections are resistant to the antibiotic ceftriaxone, making them harder to treat, especially in children. Increasingly, experts are realizing the integral role that animal health and use of antibiotics in livestock plays in rising antibiotic resistance in some foodborne germs that make people sick. This symposium will explore key issues around antibiotic resistance including: antimicrobial use and resistance in humans and in animals, antibiotic stewardship in both humans and   animals, and how to prevent resistance.
