What

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) kicks off its 63rd Annual Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Conference this Monday. This week-long event highlights the life-saving work of its current EIS officers or “disease detectives” and welcomes the incoming class of 78 EIS officers.

When

Monday, April 28 to Thursday, May 1

Where

Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel, 4355 Ashford Dunwoody Road Atlanta 30346

Background

The CDC’s EIS is a two-year postgraduate program that trains physicians and other health professionals in skills necessary to investigate infectious disease outbreaks and epidemics. Since 1951, more than 3,500 EIS officers have responded to outbreaks and other public health challenges within the U.S. and around the globe. The CDC’s EIS is the only applied epidemiology training program of its kind. Nearly half of the lead state epidemiologists and four of the last seven CDC Directors are EIS graduates. The EIS conference agenda includes presentations focusing on key CDC health initiatives - antibiotic resistance, global health security and prescription drug overdose. More details about these health initiatives and the related presentations will be provided throughout the conference.

Important Instructions
Media wishing to attend the EIS Conference should RSVP to CDC Media Relations, media@cdc.gov or (404) 639-3286.
