CDC Public Health Grand Rounds – The 25th Anniversary of the Discovery of the Hepatitis C Virus

Twenty-five years ago CDC played a pivotal role in the discovery of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). After the isolation of HCV, implementation of screening of blood products and organs for donation led to a decrease in rates of HCV infection between 1990 and 2009. In spite of these successes, HCV remains a serious threat. This session discusses how new screening guidelines, testing methods and therapeutic advances provide an opportunity to improve individual outcomes and to eventually eliminate HCV infection. Continuing Education Credits are available.

The University of Washington – Seattle Prevention Training Center was funded by the Division of Viral Hepatitis to develop a website that offers free CME/CNE credits.  The interactive case studies cover a broad array of topics related to prevention, management, and treatment of viral hepatitis.

Hepatitis C Online Course

The University of Washington was funded by the Division of Viral hepatitis to develop a self-study, interactive course for medical providers on Hepatitis C infection. At this time, Module 1: Screening and Diagnosis of Hepatitis C Infection and Module 2: Evaluation, Staging, and Monitoring of Chronic Hepatitis C are active. Additional modules will be posted soon.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham – National Training Center for Integrated Hepatitis HIV/STD Prevention Services is funded by the Division of Viral Hepatitis to develop a website dedicated to the provision of practice-focused distance learning programs. This site provides training for front line workers in HIV and STD prevention programs in Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and clinics.

ACT-First, Free online CME Course Helps Physicians Identify and Care for Patients with Liver Disease

To help improve primary care physicians’ knowledge of hepatitis B and hepatitis C, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), in collaboration with ECHO, the American College of Physicians (ACP), CDC, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, has developed ACT-First, a free, online CME course. After completing the course, physicians will know which patients to screen for liver diseases, how to screen, what to do in the patient with positive serologies, what to tell the patient, and how to decide who is a candidate for therapy.
