Eagle Books

About the Eagle Books

The Eagle Books are a series of books for Native American children and youth and others interested in healthy living. The books promote type 2 diabetes prevention and encourage a respect for traditional ways, including physical activity and healthy eating. The series was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT), in collaboration with the Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee and the Indian Health Service, in response to the burden of diabetes among Native Americans and the lack of diabetes prevention materials for Native American children.

Eagle Books products for young children include a series of four children’s books, as well as animated videos for each of the four stories and an audio podcast of the first book that is available in four languages. The children’s Eagle Books series was written by Georgia Perez, a community health representative for 19 years, who worked with the University of New Mexico’s Native American Diabetes Project. She served for many years as a community health representative in Nambe Pueblo, New Mexico. The Eagle Books were illustrated by Patrick Rolo (Bad River Band of Ojibwe, Wisconsin) and Lisa A. Fifield (Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin, Black Bear Clan).

In the Eagle Books series, a young boy, Rain That Dances, and his friends Thunder Cloud, Little Hummingbird, and Simon learn about traditional ways of being healthy from a wise eagle and his animal friends. The animal characters inspire children and young people to find joy in physical activity and healthy foods, encourage them to live healthy lifestyles and teaches them about type 2 diabetes.
