Mike Latham assumed the position of associate director for policy in the Division of Health Informatics and Surveillance (DHIS) in January 2014. He joined CDC in 2007, bringing more than 25 years of federal experience to the agency. Prior to his current position, Mr. Latham, a public health analyst, was the associate director for policy in the Health Information Technology and Surveillance Strategy Unit, Office of Public Health Scientific Services.

In his current position, Mr. Latham leads a team of analysts in coordinating, clearing, and responding to Executive and Congressional actions and other policy issues related to public health surveillance and informatics. He also works with subject matter experts in these areas to ensure that program objectives are understood and help shape the statutes, policies, and guidelines that govern DHIS’ program activities.

Prior to CDC, Mr. Latham served as a federal contractor in CDC’s Division of Strategic National Stockpile (DSNS), where he managed policy and communication issues and led the DSNS policy activities in support of the Hurricane Katrina response.

Mr. Latham retired from the United States Army in 2005 at the rank of lieutenant colonel. His military career spanned more than 21 years of service in various command and staff positions, including tours as the executive officer/special assistant to the senior artillery commander at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and as the senior policy and issues manager for the commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He culminated his military career as chief of the Inspections and Evaluation Division, Office of the Inspector General, United States Army Forces Command, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mr. Latham received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Austin Peay State University, and he is a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College (emphasis in policy management).
