Data Collection for National Adenovirus Type Reporting System (NATRS)

NATRS is a passive surveillance system that has been collecting laboratory data on types of human adenoviruses in the United States since 2014. Data are collected from collaborating public health and clinical laboratories in the United States. Laboratories report on a quarterly basis to CDC positive human adenovirus detections by

  • species and human adenovirus type,
  • specimen type,
  • collection date,
  • age, and
  • sex.

NATRS collects data from participating laboratories using a simplified report form, allowing for determination of trends in type-specific human adenovirus circulation, and more timely recognition and documentation of outbreaks. Laboratories with the capacity to type are encouraged to report to NATRS to help improve geographic and temporal surveillance.

Objectives

Type-based human adenovirus surveillance in the United States has three objectives:

  • to help public health practitioners determine patterns of circulation of human adenovirus types over time,
  • to assist with recognition and confirmation of outbreaks associated with circulating types, and
  • to inform development or use of diagnostic tests, therapeutics, and vaccines.

NATRS data are made available to public health professionals, health care providers, and the public. For a selected list of reports using NATRS data, see NATRS Publications.
