The Navajo Nation encompasses 16 million acres of New Mexico, Utah and Arizona, and is the largest Alaska Native / American Indian Reservation in the United States. From 1944 to 1986, hundreds of uranium mining and milling operations were conducted in the Navajo Nation. These mining and processing operations have left a legacy of potential uranium exposure through abandoned uranium mines/mills, drinking water and soil contamination, and homes and structures built with mining waste. The Navajo Nation central government is headquartered in Window Rock, Navajo Nation (Arizona).
