Range of Pinus

பைன் என்பது பைனஸ் குடும்பம் [1] என்ற பிரிவில் உள்ள தாவரம் ஆகும்.இது பினாய்டேயே குடும்பத்தை சேர்ந்த துணை குடும்பமாகும். ராயல் தாவரவியல் பூங்கா, க்வ் மற்றும் மிசோரி தாவரவியல் பூங்கா ஆகியவற்றால் தொகுக்கப்பட்ட தாவர பட்டியல், தற்போது 126 பைன் வகைகளை வகைப்படுத்தியுள்ளது. மேலும் பெயரிடப்படாத 35 இனங்கள் உள்ளன.[2]

பைன் என்னும் பெயரானது இலத்தீன் சொல்லான பைனஸ் என்பதிலிருந்து பெறப்பட்டது. இது இந்திய-ஐரோப்பிய அடிப்படையில் பிட்-ரெசின் என்பதிலிருந்து வந்ததாக கூறப்படுகிறது.[3] 19 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டிற்கு முன்பு, பைன்ஸ் பெரும்பாலும் ஃபிர்ஸ்கள் என குறிப்பிடப்பட்டது. சில ஐரோப்பிய மொழிகளில், பழைய நோர்ஸ் நாட்டினரின் ஜெர்மானிய அறிவாற்றல் இன்னும் பைன்ஸ்-ல் டேனிஷ் ஃபிர்ர், நார்வேஜியன் ஃபுரா / ஃபுர் / ஃபூரு, ஸ்வீடிஷ் ஃபுரா / ஃபூரு, டச்சு வூரென் மற்றும் ஜெர்மன் ஃபெஹ்ரே ஆகியவற்றில் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் நவீன ஆங்கிலத்தில், ஃபிர் இப்போது ஃபிர்அபீஸ் மற்றும் டக்ளஸ் ஃபிர் சுடோட்சுகா வரையறுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
