ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಬುದ್ಧನನ್ನು ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಅವತಾರವೆಂದು ಕಾಣಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ . ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ಪಠ್ಯ ಭಾಗವತ ಪುರಾಣದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಬುದ್ಧ, ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು-ಐದು ಅವತಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು-ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ಅವತಾರ.[1] ಅದೇರೀತಿ, ಹಲವು ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಗಳು ಬುದ್ಧ ಹತ್ತು ಅವತಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದಶಾವತಾರ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ (ಒಂಬತ್ತನೆಯ) ಅವತಾರವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ. ಬೌದ್ಧ ಧರ್ಮೀಯ ದಶರಥ ಜಟಕಾ (ಜಟಕಾ ಅತ್ಥಕಥ ೪೬೧) ರಾಮನನ್ನು ಬುದ್ಧನ ಪೂರ್ವದ ಜನ್ಮ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆ,.

ಬುದ್ಧ ಚಿಗುರೆ ಉದ್ಯಾನವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಧರ್ಮೋಪನ್ಯಾಸ ನೀಡುತಿರುವುದು.

ಬುದ್ಧ ಬೋಧನೆಗಳು ವೇದಗಳ ಅಧಿಕಾರವನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಇದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ಬೌಧ ಧರ್ಮ ನಾಸ್ತಿಕ ಚಿಂತನೆ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಬುದ್ಧನನ್ನು (ಕೆಳಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ)ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ದಶವತಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ
