মন্ত্র (/ˈmæntrə,
প্রথম দিকের মন্ত্রগুলো তৈরী করা হয়েছিল বেদের সময় ভারতীয় হিন্দুদের দ্বারা এবং এগুলো প্রায় ৩০০০ বছর পুরনো[5]। এখন বিভিন্ন হিন্দু, বৌদ্ধ, জৈন্য এবং শিখ ধর্মের স্কুল গুলোতে এগুলো দেখা যায়[3][6]। একই ধরনের ইশ্বরের স্তবস্তুতি, গুনকীর্ত্তন, ভক্তিমূলক সঙ্গীত রচনা এবং ধারনা দেখা যায় খৃষ্ট ধর্ম[2], তাওইজম এবং জোরোআস্ট্রিয়ানিজমসহ[7] অন্যান্য জায়গায়।
