বাগদাদের বৃত্তাকার শহর হল বাগদাদের মূল প্রানকেন্দ্র। আব্বাসীয় খলিফা আল মনসুর ৭৬২-৭৬৭ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে আব্বাসীয় রাজধানী হিসেবে এটি স্থাপন করেন। আব্বাসীয় সময়ে এর নাম ছিল শান্তির শহর (আরবি: মদিনাতুস সালাম) বাইতুল হিকমাহ নামক বিখ্যাত গ্রন্থাগার এখানে অবস্থিত ছিল।
