গুরু

গুরু (সংস্কৃত: गुरु) হলেন আধ্যাত্মিক জগতের পথ প্রদর্শক। তিনি অধ্যাত্মজ্ঞান প্রদান করেন। পিতামাতা, বিদ্যালয় শিক্ষক, জড়পদার্থ (যেমন বই) বা নিজের বৌদ্ধিক সত্ত্বাকেও গুরু নামে অভিহিত করার প্রথা রয়েছে।[1]

হিন্দুধর্ম সহ ভারতীয় ধর্মসমূহে এবং নব্য ধর্মীয় আন্দোলনগুলিতে গুরু বিশিষ্ট স্থানের অধিকারী। এই সকল ধর্মে আত্মজ্ঞান লাভের জন্য গুরুর সাহচর্য অপরিহার্য বলে মনে করা হয়। শিখধর্মের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা গুরু নানক বলেছিলেন, "এক হাজার চন্দ্রসূর্যও হৃদয়ের অন্ধকার দূরীভূত করতে পারে না; কেবলমাত্র গুরুর কৃপাতেই এই অন্ধকার দূর করা সম্ভব।"[2] আধুনিক ভারতে "গুরু" কথাটি "শিক্ষক" অর্থে বহুল ব্যবহৃত। পাশ্চাত্য জগতে অবশ্য যাঁর কিছু অনুগামী রয়েছে, তাকেই গুরু বলা হয়; তার জন্য তাকে ধর্মীয় বা দার্শনিক মতবাদের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা হতে হয় না।[3]
