Name three objects.  Ask patient to immediately repeat named objects One point for each correct object repeated 3

Serial 7's-Ask patient to start at 100 and count backwards by 7

Spell WORLD backwards

One point for each correct number (93, 86, 79, 72, 65) or letter

Ask patient to recall and state the three objects previously named One point for each object recalled 3
Point to a pencil and watch and ask the patient to name the objects One point for each correctly named object 2
Ask the patient to repeat, "no ifs, ands or buts" One point if repeated correctly 1
Ask patient to take a sheet of paper in his/her right hand, fold it in half, and place it on the floor. One point for each task performed correctly 3

Analysis

  • Mini-mental status exam
    • Score less than 24 suggests cognitive impairment
    • May be influenced by education and age
      • Score less than 29 if greater than 9 years of schooling suggests cognitive impairment
      • Score less than 26 if 5-9 years of schooling suggests cognitive impairment
      • Score less than 22 if less than 4 years of schooling suggests cognitive impairment
