NIOSH Program Plan By Program Areas. Fiscal Years 1984-1989

February 1984
DHHS (NIOSH) Publication Number 84-107

This Program Plan represents the culmination of a systematic process for improving the planning of the scientific research conducted by the NIOSH over a period of 5 years. Efforts have been made to specifically strengthen the mechanisms to assure scientific excellence in the research and recommendations of NIOSH, to focus the scientific activity of the Institute on the most important diseases and injuries which were work related, to define an appropriate role for NIOSH in health promotion in the workplace, and to enable a greater participation of state and local health departments in occupational safety and health. Goals have been set and plans laid to reach them for each of the following areas of work related diseases and injuries: occupational lung diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, occupational cancers, amputations, fractures, eye loss, lacerations, traumatic deaths, cardiovascular diseases, disorders of reproduction, neurotoxic disorders, noise induced loss of hearing, dermatologic conditions, and psychologic disorders. Work goals established for the areas of respirators, control systems, other personal protective equipment, sampling and analysis, and instrumentation and methods development were reviewed.
