Diabetes patients were those assigned diagnosis code 250 (diabetes mellitus) under the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification; however, diabetes did not have to be newly diagnosed or the reason for hospital admission. General hospitals, children's general hospitals, and hospitals with an average length of stay for all patients of <30 days.
The rate of diabetes among patients aged >65 years who were discharged from hospitals was significantly higher than that for any other age group and increased approximately 50% during 1988--2005. The rate increased approximately 56% for patients aged 15--44 years and 29% for those aged 45--64 years during this period. The rate for patients aged <15 years did not change.
