ATSDR's Substance-Specific Priority Data Needs

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registrys (ATSDR) congressionally mandated Substance-Specific Applied Research Program (SSARP) consists of a research agenda for priority hazardous substances. In establishing the SSARP, ATSDR first identifies data needs in its Toxicological Profiles for these substances. The data needs are then subjected to further evaluation and prioritized. The priority data needs represent essential information to improve the database for conducting public health assessments. The identified priority data needs reflect the opinion of ATSDR, in consultation with other federal programs. The needs identified here do not represent the priority data needs for any other agency or program.

Priority Data Needs Documents

Mechanisms for filling the priority data needs include partnerships with other federal agencies, universities, and industry groups. Additional priority data needs may be filled by the Agency's Great Lakes Human Health Effects Research Program and by continuing evaluation of new information relevant to the data needs. Data from the studies are expected to address the substance-specific information needs of the public and scientific community. The priority data needs associated with priority hazardous substances are described in three tables and are categorized as "Unfilled," "Filled" and "Being filled via EPA/ATSDR test rule and/or Voluntary Research Program".
