ATSDR Invites the Corpus Christi Community to Meet with Scientists to Discuss Findings of Corpus Christi Refinery Row Report for Public Comment

ATLANTA, GA – The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal public health agency, recently released its Corpus Christi Refinery Row report. The agency will hold public availability sessions and a public meeting in Corpus Christi, TX, to discuss the report.

During the public availability session, community members and other interested individuals will have the opportunity to meet and talk with scientists one-on-one, ask questions, and discuss their environmental public health concerns. A public meeting will be held after the availability session; community members can learn about the report’s findings and recommendations, as well as ask questions.

ATSDR previously issued a media advisory announcing the availability of the report for public comment on August 29, 2016. As stated in the previous advisory, ATSDR will accept public comments on this report until October 31, 2016.

Comments on the report must be made in writing and those received during the public comment period will be addressed in the final version. Comments (without the names of persons who submitted them) and ATSDR’s responses to the comments will appear in an appendix to the final report. Names of those who submit comments will be subject to release should requests be made under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.

Refinery Row Neighborhood VOC Levels Compare to National Levels

An Exposure Investigation among residents of two Corpus Christi neighborhoods found concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in personal air and blood samples were not higher than those found in a national survey of United States residents. The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted the investigation. ATSDR worked with community members to recruit 90 participants who provided information about their daily activities as well as blood, urine, and personal air samples.
