ലോകപ്രശസ്തനായ ജർമ്മൻ സംഗീതജ്ഞനും, പിയാനോ വിദ്വാനുമായിരുന്നു ലുഡ്വിഗ് വാൻ ബീഥോവൻ എന്ന ബീഥോവൻ (ജനനം:1770 ഡിസംബർ 16, മരണം:1827 മാർച്ച് 26). പാശ്ചാത്യസംഗീതലോകം ഉദാത്തതയുടെ കാലത്തു നിന്ന് കാല്പനികതയുടെ കാലത്തേക്കുള്ള പരിണാമപ്രക്രിയയിൽ പ്രധാന പങ്ക് വഹിച്ച വ്യക്തിയാണ്‌ ഇദ്ദേഹം. ലോകത്ത് ഏറെ ആദരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളതും സ്വാധീനം ചെലുത്തിയതുമായ സംഗീതജ്ഞരിൽ ഒരാളായി ബീഥോവൻ കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

അക്കാലത്ത് കൊളോൺ എലക്റ്ററേറ്റിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്ന ബോണിൽ (ഇന്ന് ജർമ്മനിയുടെ ഭാഗമാണ്‌) ജനിച്ച ബീഥോവൻ ഇരുപതു വയസിനു ശേഷം ഓസ്ട്രിയയിലെ വിയന്നയിലേക്ക് താമസം മാറ്റി. വിഖ്യാത സംഗീതജ്ഞനായിരുന്ന ജോസഫ് ഹയ്ഡനോടൊപ്പം പഠിച്ച ബീഥോവൻ പെട്ടെന്നു തന്നെ പിയാനോ വിദഗ്ദ്ധനായി പ്രസിദ്ധിയാർജ്ജിച്ചു. ഇരുപതു വയസ്സുകളിൽത്തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കേൾവിശക്തി ക്രമേണ കുറയാൻ തുടങ്ങിയെങ്കിലും തന്റെ പ്രസിദ്ധങ്ങളായ സൃഷ്ടികൾക്ക് സംഗീതം നൽകുകയും അവ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. കേൾവിശക്തി പൂർണമായും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിനു ശേഷവും അദ്ദേഹം ഇത് തുടർന്നു.
