Sudden wealth syndrome

Sudden wealth syndrome (SWS) is a name given to adjustment problems afflicting individuals who suddenly come into large sums of money, such as those who win the lottery. Becoming suddenly wealthy can cause an individual stress. Its symptoms include: feeling isolated from former friends, guilt over their good fortune, and an extreme fear of losing all their money.[1]

SWS is a term coined by psychologist Stephen Goldbart of the Money, Meaning & Choice Institute.[2]
