Aquaspirillum

Aquaspirillum (ak'wă-spī-ril'ŭm) is a genus of aerobic bacteria in the family Neisseriaceae that lives in freshwater.

Description

The species have cells that are 0.2–1.5 mcm in diameter. Their motile cells have a fascicle of flagella on one or both ends, with the exception of one species.[1] They are rigid and generally helical, and are 0.2–1.4 um in diameter. They also have a special polar membrane near the flagella.[2]

Growth Requirements

Growth is optimal in 30–32° Celsius.[3]

Phylogenetic Analysis

A phylogenetic analysis by NCBI showed data that suggested all species of Aquaspirillum, besides the type species, should be moved into their own respective genera as Aquaspirillum is phylogenetically heterogeneous.[6] However, no new genus for the misclassified species has been proposed, so they technically remain in Aquaspirillum.[7]
